‘BETWEEN THE SHEETS’ EXHIBITION
The Print Circle’s exhibition for 2008 is ‘BETWEEN THE SHEETS’ at the Ewart Art Gallery, Willoughby, New South Wales, from 15 August to 30 August 2008, (opening night 6.30pm, Friday 15 August). The Ewart Gallery is housed within the Workshop Arts Centre (WAC) and is in a sense, a coming home for us. The Print Circle was born at the WAC in 1970.
‘Between the Sheets’ is an exhibition which invites artists to explore and document their creative process. Finished works will be pinned to the wall with the idea of encouraging experimentation with presentation whilst also giving the viewer insight into each artist’s creative thought processes. Each participating member will be given a wall space of 80cms wide by 2 metres high and will be asked to present a work of this size. This will be the unifying visual theme of the show. Within this work one would find a finished print, along with other “support material” such as sketches, photographs, photocopies, writing (statements, poems, music) first state prints, “failed prints”, 3D support material – anything that helps reveal the creative journey, the origins, thoughts, inspiration and imagination that lies behind a completed print. The aim is to allow the viewer to peek behind the “picture perfect” world of printing – to peek ‘between the sheets’.
One of the most popular and successful aspects of our exhibition at Mosman, “Polarities in Print” was the public program that took place on 3 Sundays during the exhibition. We aim to run a similar programme at the Ewart Gallery, probably on the first and possibly the second Saturday of the exhibition (16, 23 August). This has not as yet been finalized but anyone interested in knowing more about printmaking and about individual works, should look, nearer the dates of the exhibition, at the Events section of our website and click on the Calendar heading.
