What is the Print Circle?
The Print Circle is a group of practicing and exhibiting women artists, based in or near Sydney, who exhibit their fine art prints together.
Who started it?
It was started by a group of women printmakers at the Workshop Arts Centre, Willoughby. Sue Buckley, artist and printmaking teacher, instigated its formation with a view to developing a wider interest in printmaking both amongst artists the wider community.
Where and when was it started?
It was started in 1970 at the Workshop Arts Centre (WAC) in Willoughby. The WAC was the first open access studio in New South Wales to offer printmaking to artists. It was and remains one of the few self-funding, not-for-profit art schools.
Where and when does it meet?
The Print Circle meets every three months, usually at the WAC but occasionally elsewhere to assist those members who are not close to Sydney’s North Shore, to attend the meetings.
Where and when does it exhibit?
It exhibits at least once a year but some years, more frequently. The venues may be Regional Galleries, private galleries or venues open to hire by individuals or groups of artists.
How many members are there?
There are approximately 30 exhibiting members, and there are two honorary members who have been associated with the Circle for a long time and who have contributed a great deal to the group. We like to keep our numbers relatively small to avoid difficulties with administering the group and to make it easier to find galleries that can exhibit the whole group.
Who are the current members?
Please see the membership page. Click on the names of the members to see more details about each member.
Can I see some example prints?
Please see the membership page. Click on the names of the members to see examples of their work.
Can anyone join?
Any person who use print as an artistic medium may be considered for membership. However, the size of the Print Circle is limited and new members are usually invited only when there is a vacancy in the membership.
How can I join?
Generally, membership is by invitation only, however anyone who uses print as an artistic medium can submit a portfolio for consideration. Membership will be voted on by the whole Print Circle membership.
What other groups is the Print Circle associated with?
The Print Circle is not associated with any other print group, however a number of its members are members of other groups. For example, nearly half of the Print Circle members our also members of the Sydney Printmakers.
How can I contact individual members of the Print Circle?
Some members have provided email addresses and personal web site links at the bottom of their individual membership pages. If there is no email address given, please contact the President of the Print Circle, Joanne Gwatkin-Williams (joanne@thevastydeep.com).
